I wrote this sketch as part of a creative writing workshop about ten years ago, and even after all these years, I am still pretty pleased with the results. I originally wanted to write a poem about sleep, or lack of sleep, but ended up with this sleep sketch. My workshop tutor was quite impressed with my attempt.
Writing poetry is still very much a work in progress for me, but one of my writing goals is to improve on my skills so far.
Me: ‘Sleep have you forgotten me?’
Sleep: ‘I think yesterday you slept enough for two.’
Me: ‘But I was tired.’
Sleep: ‘Lazy more like!’
Me: ‘Excuses, excuses.’
Sleep: ‘Chill out.’
Me: ‘SLEEP! SLEEP! SLEEP!’
Sleep: ‘Yes that’s me.’
Me: ‘I hate you.’
Sleep: ‘I thought you loved me?’
Me: ‘Please just a little bit.’
Sleep: ‘So you’d be happy with an hour?’
Me: ‘Not even worth it.’
Sleep: ‘Best get out of bed then.’
Me: ‘How about four hours?’
Sleep: ‘NO!’
Me: ‘You can take it off tomorrow night.’
Sleep: ‘Until you start whining again.’
Me: ‘I don’t whine.’
Sleep: ‘No?’
Me: ‘I’ll promise to stop whining if you just let me sleep.’
Sleep: ‘I guess my ears need a bit of a rest too.’
Me: ‘I love you sleep.’
Sleep: ‘That’s what they all say!’
